The word Wellness has permeated its way into modern culture. For many it is an “airy fairy” word that doesn’t really mean anything! That’s not so surprising when so many companies “Wellness Programs” consist solely of a bowl of fruit. Even if this does meet some general criteria of Wellness it’s seems a bit lame, and what is wellness anyway.
The World Health Organisation defines Wellness as “…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of physical disease or infirmity.” Wellness in the workplace according to Wikipedia is any workplace health promotion activity or organizational policy designed to support healthy behavior in the workplace and to improve health outcomes. Dimensions to Wellness include:
Physical Wellness: The care we take of our body for good health and functioning.
Emotional Wellness: Our ability to understand & deal with positive and negative emotions.
Psychological Wellness: To view self and others in complex, stable and accurate ways.
Social Wellness: The relationships we have and how we interact with others.
I am breaking a very complex idea down to fairly simple components and don’t profess to be able to get into all the intricacies and components of our overall health and wellness but I think this is a good starting point.
Employers in most OECD countries are bound by law to manage a safe environment for their workers. Combine this with the premise that a happy and safe worker is a more productive worker, who takes less sick days, can focus well on their tasks, get on well with their colleagues and you have the basis to formulate a “Health & Safety” and perhaps a “Wellness Program” to fit your workforce.
So what could an effective Wellness Program for so many of us working in front of a computer for 6 hours or more a day look like? It would need to mitigate the risks to the employees from the negative impacts of their work activities right? Ideally it would also seek to improve the physical, emotional, psychological and Social wellness of employees.
