I believe we are at the cusp of using technology efficiently to assist medium to large businesses help their employees COPE better in an office environment where staff spend 6 – 8 hours in front of a computer performing various work tasks.
Here are some commonly held well researched beliefs circulating in the media.
YES employers want their employees to be healthy happy and productive. Go to many large employers’ buildings and you will see that they have a small gym and regular classes run for their employees, and do you think this helps the majority of their employees. The answer is NO. Most don’t use it and the gym caters for a tiny number of employees.
I was recently having a meeting with some management staff for a business that employed about 600 people. They have a beautiful big office in downtown Melbourne. They have OH&S people, and Wellness Programs that they roll out to assist their workers to be happy and healthy. I asked them what programs that they currently had in place to assist workers with stress and anxiety, and also general health related programs. They proudly announced that they offered Pilates classes at lunch time for their employees. The conversation went something like this.
ME “So what are you already offering to your employees in the health and wellness space”?
RESPONSE “We currently offer lunch time Pilates classes”
ME “That’s great! How many people can you fit into the Pilates class”?
RESPONSE “15 – 20 people”
ME “Ok that’s is great. How many people do you have working at this firm”?
RESPONSE “About 600 … “
After that there was an uncomfortable pregnant pause as the glaring disparity between what was offered and how many people could participate sunk in. It was like an “Oh Damn that doesn’t sound so good” moment. And it doesn’t sound good! It is incredibly inefficient, probably expensive and it doesn’t work!!
Given that it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this scenario is never going to assist the majority of the workers, I will tell you what can assist the majority or all of the workers! It is a windows, or mobile based computer program/app that each and every worker can have that addresses the five points above, in a cost effective and practical way.
Those of us in the Apps space addressing workers physical and mental discomfort are probably up to the Third stage in the development of these apps. The apps have gone from clunky and intrusive, to more sophisticated and user friendly. Have you seen or experienced a stage 3 app like mine with beautiful 3D animated video, intuitive interface and a variety of tools that make the app effective and easy to use. For approximately $40 – $50 a year per person every staff member can have access to tools EVERY DAY of the year! Lastly we understand engagement with the app is key. We provide training to engage the staff to use and enjoy the app.
